Full closure on I-80 at Briggs Street over two nights

​

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that an ongoing project to replace the bridge carrying Briggs Street over Interstate 80, in Joliet, will require closures over two nights beginning, weather permitting, Tuesday, April 9. The closures are necessary to safely install concrete support beams for a new Briggs Street bridge over the expressway.

 

Tuesday, April 9

  • Starting at 9 p.m., westbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane approaching Briggs Street. 

  • Between 1 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, westbound I-80 will be fully closed at Briggs Street. 

  • During that time, a detour will direct westbound I-80 motorists to exit the interstate at Briggs Street, continue across Briggs Street to access westbound I-80 via the Briggs Street entrance ramp.

  • All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.

 

Wednesday, April 10

  • Starting at 9 p.m. eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane approaching Briggs Street. 

  • Between 1 and 5 a.m. Thursday, eastbound I-80 will be fully closed at Briggs Street. 

  • During that time, a detour will direct eastbound I-80 motorists to exit the interstate at Briggs Street, continue across Briggs Street to access eastbound I-80 via the Briggs Street entrance ramp.

  • All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday, April 11.

Overnight Closures on I-80 at River Road

​

2/28/2024 UPDATE:

 

Due to inclement weather, last night’s work on eastbound I-80 was cancelled. 

 

Below is the updated schedule for I-80 lane closures near River Road, weather permitting, with full stops for no longer than 15 minutes at a time starting at 1 a.m. each night.

 

Eastbound lane closures 

  • 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, to 5 a.m. Thursday

 

Westbound lane closures

  • 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, to 6 a.m. Friday

  • 8 p.m. Monday, March 4, to 6 a.m. Tuesday

 

The work is anticipated to be completed by, weather permitting, 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 5.

Beginning Monday (2/26), weather permitting, overnight lane closures, accompanied by 15-minute full expressway traffic stops along I-80 at River Road, are scheduled to take place over four consecutive nights beginning, weather permitting, Monday, Feb. 26. The closures are necessary to safely remove the existing bridge structure over the interstate. 

 

To complete the work, motorists should expect various overnight lane closures in both directions of I-80 near River Road. The closures are scheduled to take place on eastbound I-80 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday and westbound from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with full stops for no longer than 15 minutes at a time starting at 1 a.m. each night. The work is anticipated to be completed by 6 a.m. Friday, March 1.  

 

Motorists should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays and to allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Overnight lane closure on westbound I-80 at Shepley Road

​

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that pavement repairs on westbound Interstate 80 at Shepley Road, in Minooka, will require an overnight lane closure, weather permitting, Wednesday, Jan. 31.

 

Starting at 7 p.m. tonight, the right lane on westbound I-80 at Shepley Road will be closed to accommodate needed repairs. The work is anticipated to be completed and the lane reopened by approximately 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. However, due to the projected temperatures it may take more time for the concrete to set and gain sufficient strength before the lane can be reopened to traffic. Eastbound I-80 will not be impacted.

2/5/24 UPDATE:

The work to remove the existing Briggs Street bridge beams over eastbound I-80 was completed early so we’re now moving to the westbound side. Below is the updated schedule with the next overnight closure starting tonight, weather permitting. Reconstruction of the bridge will continue through fall.

 

Feb. 5 & Feb. 6: Westbound I-80

9 p.m. – One lane open

1 a.m. – 5 a.m. – FULL closure of westbound I-80 at Briggs Street

Detour: Exit at Briggs Street and re-enter via Briggs Street entrance ramp.

Temporary Lane Closure on Eastbound I-80 in Joliet

 

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that pavement repairs to the bridge deck on eastbound Interstate 80, west of Larkin Avenue (Illinois 7), in Joliet, will require a temporary lane closure, weather permitting, Thursday, Jan. 11.

 

Starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, the right lane on eastbound I-80, between Houbolt Road and Larkin Avenue, will be closed to accommodate needed repairs. The work is anticipated to be completed and the lane reopened by approximately 5 p.m. However, due to the projected temperatures it may take more time for the concrete to set and gain sufficient strength before the lane can be reopened to traffic. Westbound I-80 will not be impacted.

Briggs Street Bridge over I-80 Lane Changes

​

To prepare for the next stage of the project, prior to the morning rush, Thursday, Dec. 21, crews will begin shifting both directions of Briggs Street traffic onto the newly constructed southbound structure so that work can begin on the northbound side. During that time, motorists can expect flaggers and intermittent traffic stops in both directions of Briggs Street before the bridge. The new traffic pattern is anticipated to be in place by the end of the day.   

 

In the new configuration Briggs Street will remain one lane in each direction, with lane widths reductions and no shoulders over the bridge. Motorists should also expect shoulder and occasional overnight lane closures on I-80 at the bridge during that time.

Rolling I-80 Lane Closures Wednesday and Thursday

Beginning Wednesday, December 2, weather permitting, rolling lane closures will take place on I-80 between Ridge Road, in Minooka, and U.S. 30, in New Lenox, to complete pavement repairs. The closures should be expected between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday (12/20), and Thursday (12/21).  

 

The public should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment. Alternative routes are encouraged. Local streets are unable to accommodate heavy or wide trucks so other interstate routes are encouraged.

  • 9 PM - westbound I-80 reduced to one lane near Briggs St

  • 1 AM – 5 AM - westbound I-80 closed at Briggs Street

  • Detour: westbound I-80 traffic should exit at Briggs St, continue across Briggs St to access westbound I-80 via the Briggs St entrance ramp

  • All lanes reopen by 5 AM, Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • 9 PM - eastbound I-80 reduced to one lane near Briggs St

  • 1 AM – 5 AM - eastbound I-80 closed at Briggs Street

Ramp Closures on I-80 at Houbolt Road

​

A project managed by the City of Joliet to reconstruct the Interstate 80 interchange at Houbolt Road in Joliet is nearly complete! This weekend, interchange ramps will be temporarily closed to safely convert the existing interchange into the full diverging-diamond configuration.

 

  • Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-80 to Houbolt Road and the Houbolt Road ramps to eastbound and westbound I-80 will be closed. 

  • A detour will direct motorists to use U.S. 6 and Larkin Avenue (Illinois 7). 

  • All ramps are anticipated to reopen by 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, when the new traffic pattern will be in place.

 

Remember to slow down and watch for changing traffic patterns.

Closures on I-80 in Joliet October 20-23

 

To perform deck patching and repairs to I-80 bridges in Joliet, eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane between Wheeler Avenue and Richards Street beginning Friday, October 20, weather permitting. The ramp from Chicago Street (U.S. 52/Illinois 53) to eastbound I-80 will also be closed. Please follow the posted detour to access the expressway.

 

Lane and ramp closures will take place from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

 

Major travel delays are anticipated, alternative routes are strongly encouraged.

Westbound I-80 traffic shift, ramp closure through summer 2024

​

Beginning Wednesday, August 16, a stage change is scheduled to take place in Joliet.

 

Starting at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, lane closures will take place on westbound I-80 between Briggs and Chicago streets (U.S. 52/Illinois 53). At least one westbound lane will remain open at all times. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday, when the new traffic pattern will be in place. 

 

In the new configuration, westbound I-80 will be shifted to the eastbound side just before Richards Street. The two westbound lanes will split after Richards Street, rejoin and shift back over to the westbound side after Hickory Creek.  

 

Additionally, the westbound I-80 ramp to Richards Street will close for reconstruction. The Richards Street ramp to westbound I-80 is currently closed, both ramps are anticipated to reopen in summer 2024. While the ramps are closed motorists should follow the posted detour.   

 

The new configuration will allow for reconstruction of westbound I-80 bridges over Hickory Creek and Rowell Avenue and is expected to remain in place through summer 2024. Throughout construction, two lanes in each direction will remain open to traffic.

Closures on I-80 in Joliet October 6-9

​

To perform deck patching and repairs to I-80 bridges in Joliet, westbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane between Raynor Avenue and Richards Street beginning Friday, October 6, weather permitting. The ramps at Chicago Street (U.S.52/Illinois 53) to and from westbound I-80 will also be closed. Please follow the posted detour to access the expressway.

 

Lane closures will take place from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. 

 

An additional extended weekend closure will be required in the future to complete repairs on eastbound I-80.

Overnight closures on I-80 at Wheeler Avenue in Joliet

​

Beginning Monday, September 11, weather permitting, overnight lane closures will occur in both directions of I-80 near Wheeler Avenue in Joliet. Closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday, with full stops for no longer than 15 minutes at a time starting at 1 a.m. each night. The closures are necessary to install steel support beams for a new Wheeler Avenue bridge over I-80 and is anticipated to be completed by 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15.

Overnight closures on Rowell Avenue in Joliet

​

Beginning Wednesday, September 6, weather permitting, Rowell Avenue between Linden and Haven avenues will be closed in both directions, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday (9/7). The closure is required to remove the existing I-80 bridge structure.

During that time, a detour will direct Rowell Avenue motorists to Richards Street, Fourth Street and Mills Road. The removal work is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8.

Overnight lane closures on I-80 at Shepley Road 

 

Beginning Saturday, May 20, weather permitting, overnight lane closures, accompanied by 15-minute full expressway traffic stops, are scheduled to take place on I-80 near Shepley Road. The closures are necessary to safely remove the existing Shepley Road bridge over the expressway. 

 

To complete the work, motorists should expect various overnight lane closures in both directions of I-80 near Shepley Road. The closures will take place from 8 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday and from 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday to 5 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with full stops for no longer than 15 minutes at a time starting at 1 a.m. each night. The work is anticipated to be completed by 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 24.

Full Wheeler Avenue over I-80 Bridge closure begins May 22

​

Beginning Monday, May 22, weather permitting, the bridge carrying Wheeler Avenue over I-80 in Joliet, will require a full closure between Woods and Park avenues. ​A posted detour will direct motorists to Meadow Avenue, Larkin Avenue (Illinois 7) and Jefferson Street (U.S. 52). Motorists should also expect occasional overnight lane closures on I-80 at the bridge during that time. The bridge is anticipated to be closed through late 2023.

Eastbound I-80 lane changes, ramp reopens 

 

Beginning Wednesday, May 3, weather permitting, a stage change is scheduled to take place on eastbound I-80.

 

To prepare for the next stage of the project, starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday, a lane closure will take place on eastbound I-80, between Wheeler Avenue and Briggs Street. At least one eastbound lane will remain open to traffic. 

 

By 5 a.m. Thursday, May 4, all lanes reopen and the new lane pattern will be in place. In the new configuration, the eastbound lane-split at Hickory Creek will be removed and eastbound I-80 traffic will be shifted onto new pavement between Gardner and Rowell avenues.

Additionally, the ramp from Chicago Street (U.S.52/Illinois 53) to eastbound I-80 will be closed. During that time, motorists should follow the posted detour to access the expressway. At least one eastbound I-80 lane will remain open at all times and westbound I-80 will not be impacted. Eastbound I-80 motorists traveling through the region should consider alternative routes to avoid the area. Local streets are unable to accommodate heavy or wide trucks, so other interstate routes are encouraged. The ramp and all lanes are anticipated to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, April 17. 

 

Additionally, the eastbound I-80 ramp to Richards Street is closed for reconstruction, with an anticipated reopening later this spring. The posted detour directs traffic to exit Briggs Street and re-enter westbound I-80 to access the Richards Street exit. 

To complete the project, additional weekend lane and ramp closures are scheduled to take place, from 10 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays, alternating between eastbound and westbound I-80 for approximately three additional weekends, weather permitting.

Shepley Road Bridge over I-80 closing April 17 

​

Beginning Monday, April 17, weather permitting, through November, Shepley Road between West Frontage and Ingolsby roads will close. This closure is necessary to replace the bridge carrying Shepley Road over I-80.

 

A posted detour will direct motorists to River, Mound (215th Street) and County Line roads. Motorists should also expect shoulder and occasional overnight lane closures on I-80 at the bridge during that time. View detour map.

Daily lane closures on Linden Avenue beginning the week of March 13

This is preliminary work to prepare for major construction activities that start in late spring/early summer. 

 

What to expect:

  • Linden Avenue will be reduced to one lane with flaggers, between westbound Interstate 80 Richards Street exit ramp to Lehman Avenue.

  • Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional weekend closures

  • Work is scheduled to begin the week of March 13th and is estimated to be completed in approximately four weeks, weather permitting.

   

What is being done:

  • The work consists of tree and fence removal that will be in conflict with future proposed construction. 

  • During this work, parking along the south side of Linden Avenue will be restricted.  

 

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

 

The work is weather permitting and will not impact access to businesses and residences.

Overnight closures on Rowell Avenue in Joliet 

 

4/5/2023 UPDATE: Additional time is needed to complete the work. Full overnight closures are scheduled to take place on Rowell Avenue, between Linden and Haven avenues, each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting, through Friday, May 5.

 

During that time, a detour will direct Rowell Avenue motorists to Richards Street, Fourth Street and Mills Road. Access to local residences and businesses will be maintained.

 

As part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the Interstate 80 bridges over Rowell Avenue/Canadian National Railroad, in Joliet, full overnight closures are scheduled to take place over the next two weeks beginning, weather permitting, tonight, Monday, March 27. To accommodate the work, Rowell Avenue, between Linden and Haven avenues will be closed each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. A detour will direct Rowell Avenue motorists to Richards Street, Fourth Street and Mills Road. Access to local residences and businesses will be maintained.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of the ongoing efforts to replace the eastbound Interstate 80 bridges over Hickory Creek, Richards Street, Rowell Avenue/Canadian National Railroad and westbound over Richards Street in Joliet, Rockdale and New Lenox, the reconstructed ramp from Richards Street to eastbound I-80 will open, weather permitting, by 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2.
